  aat3153 high efficiency 1x/1.5x/2x charge pump for white led applications preliminary information 3153.2005.12.0.93 1 chargepump ? general description the aat3153 is a low noise, constant frequency charge pump dc/dc converter that uses a tri-mode load switch (1x), fractional (1.5x), and doubling (2x) conversion to maximize efficiency for white led applications. the aat3153 is capable of driving six led channels from a 2.7v to 5.5v input. the current sinks may be operated individually or in parallel for driving higher current leds. a low external parts count (two 1f flying capacitors and two small 1f capacitors at v in and v out ) makes this part ideally suited for small, battery-powered applications. analogictech's s 2 cwire? aat3153 high efficiency 1x/1.5x/2x charge pump for white led applications 8 3153.2005.12.0.93 functional block diagram 1x, 1.5x, and 2x charge pump d/a d/a d/a d/a d/a d/a 6 x 16 bit rom 6 x 16 bit rom s 2 cwire interface soft-start control 1mhz oscillator voltage reference vin en/set d6 d6 d5 d4 d3 d2 d1 vout c1+ c1- c2+ c2- functional description the aat3153 is a tri-mode load switch (1x) and high efficiency (1.5x or 2x) charge pump device intended for white led backlight applications. to maximize power conversion efficiency, an internal sensing circuit monitors the voltage required on each constant current sink input and sets the load switch and charge pump modes based on the input battery voltage and the current sink input voltage. as the battery discharges over time, the aat3153 charge pump is enabled when any of the four cur- rent sink inputs near dropout. the charge pump ini- tially starts in 1.5x mode. if the charge pump out- put drops enough for any current source output to become close to dropout, the charge pump will automatically transition to 2x mode. the aat3153 requires only four external components: two 1f ceramic capacitors for the charge pump flying capacitors (c 1 and c 2 ), one 1f ceramic input capacitor (c in ), and one 0.33f to 1f ceramic charge pump output capacitor (c out ).
aat3153 high efficiency 1x/1.5x/2x charge pump for white led applications 3153.2005.12.0.93 9 the six constant current sink inputs (d1 to d6) can drive six individual leds with a maximum current of 20ma each. the unused sink inputs must be connected to v out , otherwise the part will operate only in 2x charge pump mode. the s 2 cwire serial interface enables the aat3153 and sets the current sink magnitudes. s 2 cwire addressing allows inde- pendent control of two groups of current sink input: d1-d4 and d5-d6. constant current output level settings the constant current sink levels for d1 to d6 are set via the serial interface. no pwm (pulse width modulation) or additional control circuitry are need- ed to control led brightness. this feature greatly reduces the burden on a microcontroller or system ic to manage led or display brightness, allowing the user to "set it and forget it." with its high-speed serial interface (up to 1mhz data rate), the input sink current of the aat3153 can be changed suc- cessively to brighten or dim leds, giving the users real-time control of led brightness. because the inputs d1 to d6 are true independent constant cur- rent sinks, the voltage observed on any single given input will be determined by the actual forward voltage (v f ) for the led being driven. s 2 cwire serial interface the current sink input magnitude on the aat3153 is controlled by analogictech's s 2 cwire serial inter- face. the interface records rising edges of the en/set pin and decodes them into 16 different states, as indicated in table 1. there are four bright- ness levels for the main or sub-display group with the possibility of individually turning on or off each group. to further optimize power efficiency, the aat3153 also offers four low-current levels for dim led operation (data 13 through 16). during this low-current mode, the internal supply current reduces to only 50a typical. the s 2 cwire serial interface has flexible timing. data can be clocked-in at speeds greater than 1mhz, or much slower, such as 15khz. after data is submitted, en/set is held high to latch the data. once en/set has been held in the logic high state for time t lat , the programmed current becomes active and the internal data register is reset to zero. for subsequent current level programming, the number of rising edges corresponding to the desired code must be entered on the en/set pin. when en/set is held low for an amount of time greater than t off , the aat3153 enters into shutdown mode and draws less than 1a from v in . the inter- nal data register is reset to zero during shutdown. table 1: aat3153 current settings. main group sub group (d1-d4) (d5-d6) data i out (ma) i out (ma) 120 20 214 14 310 10 47 7 520 0 614 0 710 0 87 0 90 20 10 0 14 11 0 10 12 0 7 13 0.05 0.05 14 0.5 0.5 15 1 1 16 2 2
aat3153 high efficiency 1x/1.5x/2x charge pump for white led applications 10 3153.2005.12.0.93 auto-disable feature the aat3153 is equipped with an auto-disable fea- ture for each led channel. after the ic is enabled and started up, a test current of 150a (typical) is forced through each sink channel. the channel will be disabled if the voltage of that particular sink pin does not drop to certain threshold. this feature is very convenient for disabling an unused channel or during an led fail short event. thermal protection the aat3153 has a built-in thermal protection cir- cuit that will shut down the charge pump if the die temperature rises above the thermal limit, as is the case during a short-circuit of the v out pin. applications information led selection although the aat3153 is specifically intended for driving white leds, the device can also be used to drive most types of leds with forward voltage specifications ranging from 2.0v to 4.7v. led applications may include main and sub-lcd dis- play backlighting, camera photo-flash applications, color (rgb) leds, infrared (ir) diodes for remotes, and other loads benefiting from a controlled output current generated from a varying input voltage. since the d1 to d6 input current sinks are matched with negligible voltage dependence, the led brightness will be matched regardless of the spe- cific led forward voltage (v f ) levels. in some instances (e.g., in high luminous output applica- tions such as photo flash), it may be necessary to drive high-v f type leds. the low-dropout current sinks in the aat3153 make it capable of driving leds with forward voltages as high as 4.7v at full current from an input supply as low as 3.0v. outputs can be paralleled to drive high-current leds without complication. device switching noise performance the aat3153 operates at a fixed frequency of approximately 1mhz to control noise and limit har- monics that can interfere with the rf operation of cellular telephone handsets or other communica- tion devices. back-injected noise appearing on the input pin of the charge pump is 20mv peak-to- peak, typically ten times less than inductor-based dc/dc boost converter white led backlight solu- tions. the aat3153 soft-start feature prevents noise transient effects associated with inrush cur- rents during start-up of the charge pump circuit. power efficiency and device evaluation the charge pump efficiency discussion in the follow- ing sections only accounts for the efficiency of the charge pump section itself. due to the unique circuit architecture and design of the aat3153, it is very dif- ficult to measure efficiency in terms of a percent value comparing input power over output power. since the aat3153 inputs are pure constant current sinks and typically drive individual loads, it is difficult to measure the output voltage for a given input (d1 to d6) to derive an overall output power measure- ment. for any given application, white led forward voltage levels can differ, yet the load drive current will be maintained as a constant. s 2 cwire serial interface timing 1 en/set 2 n n <= 16 data reg 1n 0 t hi t lo t lat t off
aat3153 high efficiency 1x/1.5x/2x charge pump for white led applications 3153.2005.12.0.93 11 this makes quantifying output power a difficult task when taken in the context of comparing to other white led driver circuit topologies. a better way to quantify total device efficiency is to observe the total input power to the device for a given led current drive level. the best white led driver for a given applica- tion should be based on trade-offs of size, external component count, reliability, operating range, and total energy usage... not just % efficiency. the aat3153 efficiency may be quantified under very specific conditions and is dependent upon the input voltage versus the output voltage seen across the loads applied to inputs d1 through d6 for a given constant current setting. depending on the combination of v in and voltages sensed at the cur- rent sinks, the device will operate in load switch mode. when any one of the voltages sensed at the current sinks nears dropout, the device will operate in 1.5x or 2x charge pump mode. each of these modes will yield different efficiency values. refer to the following two sections for explanations for each operational mode. load switch mode efficiency the aat3153 load switch mode is operational at all times and functions alone to enhance device power conversion efficiency when v in is greater than the voltage across the load. when in load switch mode, the voltage conversion efficiency is defined as output power divided by input power: the expression to define the ideal efficiency ( ) can be rewritten as: -or- charge pump section efficiency the aat3153 contains a fractional charge pump that will boost the input supply voltage when v in is less than the voltage required on the constant current sink inputs. the efficiency ( ) can be simply defined as a linear voltage regulator with an effective output voltage that is equal to one and one half or two times the input voltage. efficiency ( ) for an ideal 1.5x charge pump can typically be expressed as the out- put power divided by the input power. in addition, with an ideal 1.5x charge pump, the output current may be expressed as 2/3 of the input current. the expression to define the ideal efficiency ( ) can be rewritten as: -or- capacitor selection careful selection of the four external capacitors c in , c 1 , c 2 , and c out is important because they will affect turn-on time, output ripple, and transient per- formance. optimum performance will be obtained when low equivalent series resistance (esr) ceramic capacitors are used. in general, low esr may be defined as less than 100m ? . a value of 1f for all four capacitors is a good starting point when choosing capacitors. if the led current sources are only programmed for light current lev- els, then the capacitor size may be decreased. capacitor characteristics ceramic composition capacitors are highly recom- mended over all other types of capacitors for use with the aat3153. ceramic capacitors offer many advantages over their tantalum and aluminum elec- (%) = 100 v out 1.5v in ?? ?? = p out = v out i out = v out p in v in 1.5i out 1.5v in = p ou t p in (%) = 100 v out v in ?? ?? = p out = v out i out = v out p in v in i out v in = p ou t p in
trolytic counterparts. a ceramic capacitor has very low esr, is lowest cost, has a smaller pcb foot- print, and is non-polarized. low esr ceramic capacitors help to maximize charge pump transient response. since ceramic capacitors are non-polar- ized, they are not prone to incorrect connection damage. equivalent series resistance esr is an important characteristic to consider when selecting a capacitor. esr is a resistance internal to a capacitor that is caused by the leads, internal connections, size or area, material compo- sition, and ambient temperature. capacitor esr is typically measured in milliohms for ceramic capac- itors and can range to more than several ohms for tantalum or aluminum electrolytic capacitors. ceramic capacitor materials ceramic capacitors less than 0.1f are typically made from npo or c0g materials. npo and c0g materials generally have tight tolerance and are very stable over temperature. larger capacitor val- ues are usually composed of x7r, x5r, z5u, or y5v dielectric materials. large ceramic capacitors (i.e., greater than 2.2f) are often available in low- cost y5v and z5u dielectrics, but capacitors greater than 1f are not typically required for aat3153 applications. capacitor area is another contributor to esr. capacitors that are physically large will have a lower esr when compared to an equivalent material smaller capacitor. these larger devices can improve circuit transient response when compared to an equal value capacitor in a smaller package size. aat3153 high efficiency 1x/1.5x/2x charge pump for white led applications 12 3153.2005.12.0.93
